Thoughts as you look at the minor scales today

As always in this 30 day routine, there is some review and some “new” material. If you do this everyday, you’ll find that reviewing a scale or pattern two days in a row will help it stick better.

Remember, to be able to improvise, you’ll need to be familiar with any key that is thrown your way.

Review: B major scales and 3rds

Review this scale and in 3rds.

Do: D minor scales and 3rd exercises

Learn the D minor scale in intervals of thirds. Note what is mentioned above about harmonic and melodic minors.

Review: Major Chromatic Arpeggio Exercises

Review these exercises with the goal of eventually being able to them in different patterns, different rhythmic patterns and the like. Try doing with different rhythms and the like. Also, try to “reverse” this one. In other words, it is written to go up on Bb, down on B, up on C, etc. Try doing it by ear, starting down on Bb, up on B, down on C, etcetera….. The idea is to be fluent with these patterns.

Do: Ab arpeggio exercises

Get familiar with these arpeggios. Ab major is probably the WORST key on a saxophone (along with Eb) but developing mastery over these keys is essential.
